Looking to enrol your child in a martial art?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) might be just what you’re looking for!
At Axis BJJ Academy, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes for kids aged 6 and up. Our approach is focused on making learning fun, with no sparring involved in the kids’ classes. Instead, we teach key principles of BJJ through games, rather than relying on repetitive drills. The aim is to create an enjoyable experience that keeps kids engaged.
We help kids become more confident, capable and happier
At its core, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu empowers kids, helping them grow in confidence and self-control. We teach children to avoid physical confrontation whenever possible, but we also give them the tools they need to protect themselves if necessary.
It’s not about teaching kids to be aggressive—it’s about giving them the skills to avoid being victims. Every child deserves the ability to defend themselves.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about how we approach teaching BJJ to kids, we’d be happy to chat or invite you to observe a class. Our priority is ensuring a safe, supportive environment where children can grow both physically and emotionally, while learning skills that will benefit them far beyond the mats.
6 reasons to enrol your child at Axis BJJ
At Axis BJJ, the focus is on helping children grow, not just in their skills on the mat, but in ways that will benefit them throughout their lives. For parents considering enrolling their child in a martial art, BJJ provides lasting advantages.
#1. It's fun and they'll make new friends
We’re not running a bootcamp! Our classes are designed to be fun, and children love the playful and engaging way we teach BJJ. As they participate in games and group activities, they also have the chance to meet and make new friends. The supportive atmosphere encourages teamwork, making the experience not only educational but also socially enriching.
#2. It will build your child's confidence and self-esteem
We understand, some children are more outgoing than others. Some need a little more help and encouragement. We make sure no child is left behind. As your kids learn new techniques and reach milestones like earning belts, they gain a sense of accomplishment. This boosts their confidence and helps them feel proud of what they can achieve, both in and out of class.
#3. It will reduce your child's screen-time and encourage socialising with other kids
With so much time spent on screens these days, BJJ provides an opportunity for kids to disconnect and engage in something active. Structured classes give them a reason to step away from screens and get moving, while also helping them develop communication and teamwork skills.
#4. It will help your child overcome challenges and build resilience in a safe environment
Training in BJJ comes with challenges and setbacks, which teaches children perseverance. When they face difficulties learning a new technique, they learn the value of resilience. This mindset carries over into other aspects of life, helping them approach obstacles with determination.
#5. It teaches defence against bullying
Bullying is a sad fact of life. Every child has the right to defend themselves. BJJ can give your child the tools they need to deal with bullying, not just through self-defense, but by giving them the confidence to stand up for themselves without aggression. They learn how to handle difficult situations calmly and respectfully, which often prevents bullying from escalating.
#6. It keeps your child healthy and active.
BJJ is a great way to keep kids physically active in a safe, structured setting. It’s a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility, and coordination—perfect for helping children stay fit, especially with so many indoor distractions these days.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for children?
Yes, our classes are designed with safety in mind. The focus is on technique and control, not striking. Our instructors emphasise learning in a safe, supervised environment where students practice safe falling, rolling, and grappling techniques with minimal risk of injury. We monitor students closely to ensure safety during training.
Will my child need to spar (roll) with others?
No. There is no sparring in our kids classes. We focus on learning techniques and having fun without the need for sparring. Rolling, or live sparring, may be introduced gradually for some hand-selected, as they gain more confidence and skills, but it’s always supervised and optional. Our classes emphasise games and drills to build foundational skills.
What should my child wear to their first class?
If you’re just trying out a class, your child can wear comfortable athletic clothes like a t-shirt and shorts – which they don’t mind being potentially damaged. The important thing is to ensure they’re dressed in something they can move around in without restriction. Please nothing with zips or metal buttons as they may damage our mats.
My child may be a little too old/young for the kids classes. Can they still train?
Our kids classes are aimed at ages 6-12. If your child is older are larger than the kids pictured, we recommend they attend our adult beginner classes (Monday 6.45-8pm and Wednesday 6.30-8pm). They will be looked after and paired with responsible partners.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu suitable for all children, regardless of their fitness level?
Absolutely! BJJ is suitable for children of all fitness levels. We are experienced in working with children of different abilities and adapt the training to match the individual needs of each child. Kids who may not be naturally athletic or confident in sports often thrive in BJJ because of the emphasis on technique and problem-solving over strength.
